Colombian Currency

Colombia's official currency is the peso ($), issued by the Central Bank. Banknotes issued can be $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000, $20,000 and $50,000, and coins in circulation are $50, $100, $200, $500 and $1,000. Money coming in and out of the country, in this denomination or any other, is restricted and must be declared on arrival or departure.

The exchange of foreign currencies must be done exclusively in exchange offices in airports, hotels and banks, and never on the street. The exchange rate is approx.

1 USD = 2,300 Colombian pesos (approximately).

Debit Cards.

In general, all major department stores, shops, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants accept debit cards.

Credit Cards.

Most hotels, restaurants and commercial establishments accept international credit cards. The most widely accepted are Visa and Master Card. Only some places accept American Express and Diners Club.

ATMs.

The major cities in the country have an extensive network of ATMs that generally operate 24 hours a day and offer an English option. The transactions generally permitted are: balance inquiry, withdrawals, transfers and cash advances. Refrain from giving your debit card or credit card to strangers or disclosing your personal password (PIN). ATMs are located in strategic locations, in particular on the main roads and shopping centers. Some like Cirrus, Visa and Mastercard allow international debit and credit transactions.

Travelers Checks.

Before acquiring them in your country of origin, it is advisable to check on the availability of agencies or branches in Colombia. The most widely used travelers checks are those issued by American Express and Citicorp. You can pay using this method of payment in the most exclusive hotels. They are generally not used for commercial transactions.
