Transportation options to and from Medellín

Airports

Bogotá has only one airport called "El Dorado International Airport". Medellin has two: Olaya Herrera Airport, which handles domestic flights, and José María Córdova International Airport, located one hour from Medellin.

The main international airport serving the city is José María Córdoba International Airport, located outside the Aburrá Valley in Rionegro. It offers flights to major cities in Colombia and international flights to destinations in the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Central and South America, as well as connections to many other hubs around the world.

Olaya Herrera Airport is located within Medellin, and offers regional and domestic flights.

Arrival of attendees

You are responsible for transportation to your hotel, unlike for hotels recommended on the National University website. Conference days start at 7:00am.

Medellin's mass transit system is outlined below.

1.- Metro

The Metro is the high capacity Mass Transport System that covers the Metropolitan Area of Medellin from south to north, from north to northeast, from the city center to the west, and from west to northwest. As one of the first experiments in modern mass transportation in Colombia, the Medellin metro is one of the most elaborate examples of urban planning in the department of Antioquia.

2.- Metrocable

Metrocable is a transit system based on cable cars, supplementing the Medellin Metro with three lines:

The K line connects with Acevedo Station and runs through the northeastern neighborhoods of Andalusia, Popular, and Santo Domingo.

The J line connects with San Javier metro station and runs to three stations above the Central and Northwestern areas of Medellin.

The L line connects Santo Domingo station with the town of Santa Elena. This line is aimed at tourists and runs 4.6 kilometers over commune 1 in Medellin to Arví Park.

Transporting approximately 40,000 travelers per day, with 10 travelers per cabin, this transport system improves mobility conditions for the inhabitants of Medellin, providing a quick, inexpensive and environmentally friendly service.

You can access this service free of charge by connecting via the Metro. Find schedules and prices for each of the lines here. Consider using public transit to help support transport in Medellin!

3.- Tram

This is a tram system from the San Antonio METRO station to the neighborhood of Alejandro Echavarria. Its path crosses two cablecar routes.

The first is the Miraflores Cablecar, which starts from the area of the same name and ends in the neighborhood of Trece de Noviembre, with one intermediate station in the El Pinal neighborhood. The second, the Alejandro Echavarría Cablecar, runs from the neighborhood with the same name to Retorno station through the neighborhoods of Villa Turbay and La Sierra, with an intermdiate station in the neighborhood of San Antonio in the Las Torres sector.

The Avenida Ayacucho Green Corridor serves the community in the east central area of Medellin.

4.- Taxi

Taxis in Colombia are yellow. It is recommended to request them at your hotel. Cost depends on the trip, but the minimum is $2.20 USD.

There is an application in Colombia on smart phones and tablets called SmartTaxi that makes it possible to get a taxi anywhere in Medellin. It is very useful for checking your route, arrival time, time to destination, cost, etc. The vehicles using this service are safe and its staff are highly qualified professionals. The application can be downloaded in the Appstore for iPhone and in the Playstore for Android. (Smart Taxi).
