Practical Tips
Appropriate clothing:
- Colombia experiences an entire range of climates from heat to perpetual snow. To decide on appropriate clothing, it is important to identify the climate of the destination you have chosen. In hot climates, it is common to use light clothing made of material such as cotton in order to stay cool and comfortable. In mild or cold climates, it is customary to use clothing that protects skin from contact with the cold air. This usually means wool or waterproof fabrics.
Electric power:
- In Colombia, electricity is 110 volts. The sockets are American-style, with two flat input pins. Electrical current is generally regulated in hotels. Power adapters and converters can be bought at the central market. It is advisable to ask before connecting electrical appliances.
Business hours:
- Most commercial establishments open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00/10:00 am until about 7:00/9:00 pm Some stores close between 12 pm and 2 pm.
Tipping:
- Tips are financial rewards that are given as thanks for good service and the product consumed. In Colombia, for some services, 10% of the bill is included in addition to the value to be paid. Remember that tipping is entirely voluntary, even though it may be included in the bill.
